What is polynomial degree?

The degree is the highest exponent. 3x⁴−2x²+x−7 has degree 4 (quartic).

Degree names

0: constant. 1: linear. 2: quadratic. 3: cubic. 4: quartic. 5: quintic.

Why degree matters

Degree determines: number of roots (at most n), end behavior, and number of turning points (at most n−1).
