Selling Price = Cost × (1 + Markup%/100)

$50 cost with 40% markup: $50 × 1.40 = $70.

Markup vs margin

Markup is based on cost: (Selling − Cost)/Cost. Margin is based on selling price: (Selling − Cost)/Selling. A 40% markup = 28.6% margin.
