Discount calculator
Find the sale price after applying a percentage discount. See exactly how much you save.
How to calculate a discount
Formula: Sale Price = Original Price × (1 − Discount% ÷ 100)
Savings: Savings = Original Price × (Discount% ÷ 100)
For example, a $79.99 item at 25% off: Savings = $79.99 × 0.25 = $20.00. Sale price = $79.99 − $20.00 = $59.99.
Quick mental math for discounts
10% off: Move decimal one place left. $79.99 → save $8.00.
20% off: Find 10%, then double it. $8.00 × 2 = $16.00 off.
25% off: Divide the price by 4. $79.99 ÷ 4 ≈ $20.00 off.
33% off: Divide the price by 3. $79.99 ÷ 3 ≈ $26.66 off.
50% off: Divide the price by 2. $79.99 ÷ 2 ≈ $40.00 off.
Double discounts (stacking)
When a store offers 20% off plus an extra 10% off, the discounts are applied sequentially, not added. A $100 item at 20% then 10%: $100 × 0.80 = $80, then $80 × 0.90 = $72. This is less than a single 30% discount ($70).
Frequently asked questions
What's the difference between discount and markup?
Discount reduces the price (for buyers). Markup increases the cost (for sellers setting retail price). A 25% discount on $100 gives $75. A 25% markup on $60 cost gives $75 retail.
How do I calculate the original price from a sale price?
Original Price = Sale Price ÷ (1 − Discount%/100). If something costs $60 after 25% off: $60 ÷ 0.75 = $80 original price.
