Expanding expressions
Use the distributive property to multiply out brackets. Each term inside one bracket multiplies every term in the other.
FOIL method
For (a+b)(c+d): First + Outer + Inner + Last. (x+3)(x−2) = x² − 2x + 3x − 6 = x² + x − 6.
Special products
(a+b)² = a² + 2ab + b². (a−b)² = a² − 2ab + b². (a+b)(a−b) = a² − b².
