When do decimals repeat?

A fraction a/b in lowest terms has a terminating decimal if b only has factors of 2 and 5. Otherwise, it repeats.

1/7 = 0.142857142857... (period 6). 1/3 = 0.333... (period 1). 1/8 = 0.125 (terminates).
