Geometric mean calculator
Calculate the geometric mean — the nth root of the product of n values. Best for growth rates and ratios.
Values
Geometric mean formula
GM = (x₁ × x₂ × ... × xₙ)^(1/n)
Geometric mean of 2, 8: √(2×8) = √16 = 4. Of 2, 8, 32: ∛(2×8×32) = ∛512 = 8.
When to use geometric mean
Average growth rates (investment returns year over year), population growth, any data involving multiplication or ratios.
Geometric vs arithmetic mean
The geometric mean is always ≤ the arithmetic mean. They're equal only when all values are identical. Use geometric for multiplicative data, arithmetic for additive.
